
Mega Water Supply Scheme Peshawar is currently being reviewed by the technical experts and stakeholders submitted the report to the Health Engineering Department (PHED) Khyber Pakthunkhwa in mid December last year.
Qaisar Zaman Khan Executive Engineer PHED Peshawar told APP that this mega project costing Rs.48 billion was presently under scrutiny of the technical experts of the PHED and other stakeholders.
The project on completion would cater to the 294 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) drinking water needs of the urban localities of the provincial capital up to 2040.
NESPAK is the consultants of the project while PHED KPK was the client. The launching of this gigantic project linked with completion Bara Dam and Jabba Dam.
Present requirement of the drinking water of Peshawar district is around 137 million gallons per day which would increase to 294 million gallons per day by the year 2040. The project water demand is for 4.28 million populations.
Qaisar Zaman said that 2 alternates are presently under consideration of the experts for the execution of the project and the experts would optional for the alternates which is less cost effective.
The first alternate before the experts was to pump water from Warsak Dam having capacity of 254 million gallons per day as the major source of water with Bara Dam and Jabba Dam each 20 MGD capacity.
The second alternate being given weight-age was to gravitate water from Munda Dam, which has the capacity of 254 MGD through gravity system which is less cost effective.
Pumping water from the major source that is Warsak dam is expensive as its recurring expenditures are too high whereas utilizing Munda Dam as the major water source for the project would cost less.
To a question, XEN PHED said that the project completion period is five years from the day of launching.
He said that after the project was completed by the experts, foreign donors like Asian Development Bank, World Bank and JAICA are likely to funded this mega project.
