As roads are meant for vehicular traffic, the footpaths are made especially for the pedestrians. However, second half of this universal concept does not exist in Peshawar at all.

Because in this oldest living city the footpaths are used to fix the transformer poles (as on University Road); to install gas meters (as on Mall Road); to sell caps, hosiery, sunglasses, toys etc (as in Saddar); to serve eatables (as near Stadium Chowk in Saddar); to display electronic items (as in Khyber Bazaar); to display tea and spices (as in Pippal mandi); to fix traffic lights (as on Khyber Road); to fix the pedestrian overhead bridge (as on Khyber Road); the motorcycle mechanics occupying footpaths (as in Sarki); ironsmiths using footpaths to run their businesses doing their work on the footpaths (as in Lohari); and last but not the least some of the footpaths also have security check posts (as near Railway quarters).

It is a proven fact that the accidents in which vehicles hit pedestrians occur more in areas that do not have pavements or footpaths. But it is the expertise of the Peshawar pedestrians to remain safe in such congested and dangerous traffic.

Despite of the fact the pedestrians in Peshawar have to come down on the roads with their passages being blocked on some points on the footpaths they still remain safe and avoid the speedy vehicle that pass by them in a flash.

It would be biased if I put blame only on the ANP government for all the above stated facts. However, it is a true fact that despite of the fact that since long our leaders from every ruling party had given statements promising to bring back the glory of Peshawar as ‘City of Flowers’. However, none of these leaders have taken any proper steps to do so. What to say of our leaders who cannot provide proper footpaths for the pedestrians and still claims to launch mega projects for the Provincial Capital.
