The provincial government has not fulfilled its promise to provide free treatment to kidney patients. Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) is the only separate centre in Khyber Paktunkhwa for the treatment of kidney patients.

The Frontier Post has learnt that the outdoor patients visiting Institute of Kidney Diseases for dialysis are being charged Rs1300 to Rs2000 with majority of the patients are poor and coming from different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata. 

In KID Centre Hayatabd currently 14 machines are working for dialysis of kidney disease patients while one machine is not functional for the last so many months.

Karim Khan from Charsadda told The Frontier Post that he was waiting for the last two days for the dialysis of his daughter but because of large number of patients visiting the centre he could not get chance for the treatment of his daughter.

A technician at the kidney centre said there was not separate ward for children with kidney disease and they were admitted in female ward.

The technician on the condition of anonymity added that most of the patients were poor and could not be able to maintain their treatment, adding that most of the patients maintain their treatment for aid from the people as well as with different welfare trust.

TMO officer at KID centre Dr. Zulfiqar said that they were working day and night to facilitate patients at KID centre but as from all the province patients came to the centre which is extra burden on us.

He said that at least in every district hospital of Khyber Paktunkhwa one centre of kidney disease should be established by the government, adding that every day kidney disease patient’s numbers were increasing in the province.
