Peshawar-Torkham road gateway to trade in region: US Envoy

US Consul General in Peshawar, Robert G Reed said that Washington believes in long-term relations with Islamabad, for brining economic prosperity, stability and development in this region.

“We need to further improve bilateral economic and trade ties, the role of business community is eminent to bolster mutual relations through joint ventures and collaborative measures, US Consul General stressed while speaking to members of business community here at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KPCCI) on Wednesday.

On the occasion, KPCCI chief Dr Mohammad Yousaf Sarwar, Vice presidents, Malik Iftikhar Awan, Mohammad Anees Ashraf, member of executive body, renowned industrialists and leaders of business community were present.

Referring the recently inaugurated US funded road project, he said “The Peshawar-Torkham Highway is a gateway to increased trade and economic development in the regio n.” The United States is providing up to $70 million to reconstruct the 46 km road over the next two years, he informed

He said the USAid is being utilising all resources to address current energy crisis in Pakistan. “We had made practical steps for overcoming with major issues confronting with the people of Pakistan”, he evoked. The US Aid agency, he said, had seriously taken measures for promotion of economic activities, and development of private sector along with generation of hydro power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. 

“American is continually providing Aid for the ongoing war against terrorism and establishment of sustainable and durable peace in this region”, Mr Reed said.

While US delegation comprised on Ms Tammy Paltchikov, Consul Public Relations US consulate in Peshawar, Ms Marya Alvarvado, Political/Economic Officer, and Ms Laura Ingram. The US delegation discussed the matters regarding enhancement of bilateral trade relations, exchange of business delegations, and development of industrialisation with assistance of United States agency for International Development and effective steps for promotion of economic stability and poverty alleviation in this region.
